By volunteering your time at Dream Catchers, you are helping us help others. Volunteers are essential to our ability to provide services to people with special needs. You get to share in the miracles that we see every day. Our greatest need for volunteers is assisting participants who are learning to ride, learning how to care for horses, or who are receiving speech therapy while mounted on horses.
What can Volunteers do to help?
Volunteer in Lessons: The majority of volunteers assist our PATH Intl certified riding instructors with the students who are learning to handle and ride horses each week in our therapeutic riding lessons. Over 300 hours of volunteer time are needed each week!
Maintain the Facility: Mowing, landscaping maintenance, cleaning as well as other repair and maintenance are constant needs for the 22 acre and 20 stall barn facility.
Office Support: A few volunteers assist with receptionist and administrative duties.
What are the requirements to volunteer?
Volunteers must be 14 years or older and have completed the New Volunteer Orientation workshop before signing up as a volunteer. You must also be able to pass a background check, be physically fit enough to walk/jog for 45 minutes at a time and lift 25lbs comfortably.
Different requirements apply for Facility and Office Volunteers. Please call the office at 757 – 566 – 1775 for more information.
If I have a special need, can I still volunteer?
Please call us at 757-566-1775 to discuss your abilities and our volunteer needs.
How often and at what time will I be volunteering?
1 ½ hours per week for a complete seasonal session. Substitutes are available for an occasional absence. The majority of our participants ride after school during the school year, in the mornings during the summer, and on Saturdays.
Do I have to have experience with horses or people with special needs?
No. We provide training for volunteers to work with people who have special needs and to be safe around horses.
If I have horse experience, do I have to attend the trainings?
Yes. We follow specific procedures. Consistency in handling our horses is crucial to our success.
