Make Reading Fun!
Is your child struggling with reading skills? Difficulties in identifying letters and sounds, choppy reading, and frustrations with reading are all indicators that your child may need extra practice. Please join us for a different approach to literacy skills! Children will experience encouraging and enjoyable sessions with reading practice centered around time with a horse!
From time in the saddle to get the brain engaged, to leading a horse, to practicing decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills, your child will experience reading with nurturing and fun methods.
Dream Catchers will provide a unique therapeutic environment outside of the classroom where children can experience our beautiful 22-acre farm, connect with our horses, and create a positive connection to reading. Reading to horses fosters a nonjudgmental environment so reading can be fun. Children then equate the positive experience with horses to reading, which reinforces that reading is a fun, interactive experience. Horses help children connect to their books. The experience will also improve social skills by encouraging students to talk about what they read to their horse.
In addition, children will benefit from the movement of the horse when riding. The movement of the horse provides neuromotor input (the relationship between the nervous system and movement) that can activate the brain to get it ready to learn. With each step of the horse, the participant receives sensory information about balance and where their body is in space. This sensory information enhances attention and memory. Participants also practice discriminating right and left, visual tracking while steering, and visual scanning while riding a pattern, all of which are necessary skills for reading.
Our reading program leverages the opportunity to foster the natural connection between children and horses. Our goal is to spark the imagination and motivate participants so they can experience the joy of reading and will want to improve their current reading skill level.
Our reading program is taught by certified professionals, who bring years of experience to our team and who put safety and best practices first. Laura Treese is a certified Wilson Reading System® teacher and a special education teacher. Heather Oman is a speech language pathologist and a PATH Intl. certified therapeutic riding instructor.
